Exciting News!!

We've got some new additions here at Leaning Oaks Farm. Well, let me back up a bit ...

Back in April, we had a request to take in an injured chicken who had been hanging out at a house where they had no other chickens. She'd been there about a month, and had apparently gotten a little too comfortable with the dogs, and they got ahold of her. The homeowners had tried to find where she belonged - her wings had been clipped so we know she belonged to someone. But no one claimed her, and with the injury, they knew she needed to go somewhere safer. So we picked her up and rehabbed her as best we could.

Turns out she's a bantam, although I'm not sure what breed. If anyone has thoughts on that, please let me know. And she lays tiny light cream colored eggs, which she is very proud of.

Lee quickly named her Minnie, and as it became apparent that her injury would leave her with a permanent limp, he started calling her "Gimpy" Minnie. She doesn't seem to mind.

The only problem, however, was that the rest of our flock didn't really take to her. While they tolerate her free-ranging in the yard with them, they wouldn't allow her in the coop with them. So ... as we had just moved our main flock into a brand new coop (that will be a post for a later day), we refurbed the old coop that had been damaged in a hailstorm and Minnie now had her own crib. She seemed happy enough, but we decided to keep an eye out for anyone selling any bantams in our area, so she wouldn't be lonely. But ... by the time I saw any posts on FB about bantams for sale, they were already gone.

Which leads me to today's big news. I gave up on buying locally, and I broke down and ordered some chicks. And they arrived today! We have 6 Mille Fleur d'Uccle chicks in our brooder.

I had forgotten how much fun new chicks can be.

Now we wait to see what we ended up with, as I could only order straight run. In truth, I'd be happy with at least one cockerel, as I've read that these chickens tend to be on the broody side and are good mamas.

I hope to get more/better pics and will post them soon. In the meantime, we're enjoying the soft chirp of chicks in the living room. 😁

It's Been a Hot Minute

I've been thinking that I really needed to get back to this, but I didn't really intend for it to be this way. I just walked out into the...
